There has been a lot of talk about what exercise
the human being ideally has been built for: is
it running, or maybe swimming, maybe even
fighting? But the truth is, biomechanically, nature
made man... to walk.
There are two explanations for this: Firstly, seems like we have
different gears. Our bone and muscular structures are designed so
that the mechanics of taking steps give us the best physical
support. Secondly, from a rational point of view, we now know
what the main physical activity carried out by the human race for
hundreds of thousands of years, was.
It was walking.
Human beings were nomads for several hundred thousands
years. This was the only option, if they wanted to stay alive. There
were no cars, no trains, no planes, horses were not yet tamed.
Humans could only walk. And this walking was fundamental for
the search for food, both the gatherer type and the hunter type
that followed the herds of large herbivores.
Honestly, I have spent years listening to many experts talking
about what the healthiest activity for the human body is. Is it
running, jumping, throwing objects, fighting, swimming - what is
it? The first thing I thought was that if we were made to swim, why
