brain activity responsible for
memory and emotional regulation.
It can also lower heart rate, blood
pressure, oxygen consumption,
adrenaline, and cortisol levels.
Some studies have also shown a
higher level of testosterone, growth
hormone and even DHEA. A release
of these anabolic hormones can aid
in recovery by further stimulating
tissue repair and reducing
inflammation. This allows athletes
to train harder and more frequently
if they choose.
2. Accelerated recovery
In addition to the release of
anabolic hormones for recovery,
regular meditation has been found
to enhance deep REM sleep. It
may also reduce the inflammatory
biomarker IL-6, which is known
to impair sleep, whilst increasing
levels of the powerful antioxidant
glutathione. Glutathione then
metabolises other biomarkers of
stress, leading to faster recovery.
3. Boosts the immune system
Regular meditation can reduce
risk of illness as it improves levels
of immunoglobulins which fights
pathogens in the body. A strong
immune system increases overall
health outcomes, and therefore
athletes will have more “healthy
days” to continue training
consistently without getting sick.
